    Comprehensive Analysis

    1) "Pcmcia" -- As to pcmcia ethernet

In computing, PC card (originally PCMCIA card) is the form factor of a peripheral interface designed for laptop computers. It was originally for memory expansion, but the existence of a usable general standard for notebook peripherals led to all manner of devices being made available in this form. Typical devices include network cards, modems and hard disks.

Many notebooks used to come with two Type II slots with no barrier in between (allowing two type II cards or one type III card). With the removal of legacy ports, most modern notebooks only feature one Type II card slot.

PCMCIA cards were designed by the US computer industry to compete with the Japanese JEIDA cards. The two standards later merged as JEIDA 4.1 or PCMCIA 2.0 (PC Card) in 1991.

Two PC cards. The thinner card is Type II and the thicker is Type III.

PCMCIA originally stood for Peripheral Component MicroChannel Interconnect Architecture. This awkward initialism was jokingly expanded as "People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms" or "Personal Computer Manufacturers Can't Invent Acronyms". It was then retronymmed to name the standards organization, the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association. Difficulty with the acronym led to the simpler term "PC Card" for the version 2 specification.

All PC cards use same connecting interface with 68 pins. All are 85.6 mm long and 54.0 mm wide. The form factor is also used by the Common Interface form of Conditional Access Modules for DVB broadcasts. The 16 mm thick "Type IV" card, introduced by Toshiba, was not officially sanctioned by th..."

Ethernet is a large, diverse family of frame-based computer networking technologies for local area networks (LANs). The name comes from the physical concept of the ether. It defines a number of wiring and signaling standards for the physical layer, through means of network access at the Media Access Control (MAC)/Data Link Layer, and a common addressing format.

Ethernet has been standardized as IEEE 802.3. Its star-topology, twisted pair wiring form became the most widespread LAN technology in use from the 1990s to the present, largely replacing competing LAN standards such as coaxial cable Ethernet, token ring, FDDI, and ARCNET. In recent years, Wi-Fi, the wireless LAN standardized by IEEE 802.11, has been used in addition to or instead of Ethernet in many installations.
